Here’s what you need to know:

What: Big 12 Championship Game

When: Saturday, Dec.2, 2023

Where: AT&T Stadium

Time: 12 p.m.

TV: ABC

Heading into Saturday's contest, the Longhorns are sitting at No. 7 in the AP and CFP rankings with an 11-1 record. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian believes his team has a strong case for a playoff berth, but he has also acknowledged that the Longhorns can't suffer a letdown against the Cowboys.

Texas won the championship game in the Big 12′s inaugural 1996 season and now will try to bid farewell to the conference with a bookend title.

On the way out, the seventh-ranked Longhorns (11-1, No. 7 CFP) are the league’s last hope for the four-team College Football Playoff. Even with a win over No. 19 Oklahoma State (9-3) in the Big 12 championship game Saturday, SEC-bound Texas would still need a lot of help to make the playoff.

The last time the Longhorns won the Big 12 was 2009 to make the BCS national championship game, and their only other title was as the league’s last national champion during the 2005 season.

Oklahoma State won seven of its last eight games during sophomore running back Ollie Gordon’s breakout as the nation’s leading rusher and is in the Big 12 title game for the second time in three seasons.

Having won the inaugural Big 12 Championship title nearly three decades ago, Texas are now looking to bid farewell to the conference in style, though whether victory at AT&T Stadium will be enough to secure a spot in the playoffs remains to be seen. Playing the role of underdog are Oklahoma State, and it's a part they've relished this season.

Mid-table mediocrity was all that was predicted for the Cowboys at the start of the season, and that looked about right when they kicked off the campaign with a pair of victories and defeats. Who could have imagined that Mike Gundy's men would win seven of their next eight games to challenge for the Big 12 title?

The playoffs may be beyond reach but they'll be determined to deliver a parting gift to their long-time sparring partners, the Longhorns, before they set out for pastures new. It's just what good friends do.

Though an ACL injury has robbed Texas of their superb RB Jonathon Brooks, and Quinn Ewers has had issues converting in the red zone, Texas' 8-1 record speaks for itself, and it's the reason why they're heavy favorites for the trophy.
