Girona missed a chance to return to the top of the Spanish league on Monday when it was held at home by Athletic Bilbao to 1-1.

Girona is the surprise team in La Liga and won 11 of its previous 12 games.

The Catalan side was the more spritely early on and had a first-half goal ruled out after a video review.

It took the lead 11 minutes into the second half when Ukrainian winger Viktor Tsygankov charged into a crowded penalty box and swept home a low cross from the left.

Girona’s 19-year-old Brazilian Savinho was once again one of the best players on show and it was his pass that led to Tsygankov’s goal.

However, the home side could not retain the lead. Twelve minutes after the opening score Girona defenders failed to halt a run from Iñaki Williams and he got off a side-footed shot that sneaked inside the goalkeeper’s left-hand post.

The result means Girona remained in second place, tied on points with leader Real Madrid, but four points ahead of Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, who were tied for third.

Los Blancos would be eyeing for their fifth straight win in all competitions following a 4-2 midweek Champions League win over Napoli, while Granada look to snap a 11-game winless streak in La Liga after the 3-1 loss to Alaves.

Rodrygo is expected to be available after being taken off due to a cramp against Napoli on Wednesday, while Carlo Ancelotti is set to miss a host of players.

Vinicius Jr, Luka Modric, Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Guler, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Aurelien Tchouameni, Eder Militao and Thibaut Courtois are also definitely unavailable for selection due to injury issues.

With Joselu likely to partner Rodrygo, Jude Bellingham will once again be in focus just behind the front two, while Lucas Vazquez and Nacho in line to make the back four.

On loan from Real Madrid, Jesus Vallejo is ruled out through a hamstring problem. Miguel Angel Rubio has an ankle injury. Bryan Zaragoza is back from a ban to feature alongside Lucas Boye and Myrto Uzuni in the front-three. Fresh in the dugout, Alexander Medina is likely to stick to a similar XI with the exception of bringing in Ricard Sanchez at the back.

Real Madrid are hosting Granada in what should be a fairly manageable game for Ancelotti and his men. The Andalusian side have been very bad so far this season and it’s clear that they will be fighting to avoid relegation by the end of this campaign.

Vinicius, Camavinga, Modric and Tchouameni are all injured but Real Madrid should still have what it takes to beat Granada even if Ancelotti decides to make some rotations and rest Bellingham, who missed Friday’s training session with a minor physical problem which didn’t prevent him from making the squad list.

The result, a 4-2 victory, means Carlo Ancelotti's side are through to the knockout round of the competition as head of Group C. They've also been victorious in their last two LaLiga matches, wins over Valencia and Cadiz, which has seen them move four points clear of third-placed Atletico Madrid and fourth-placed Barcelona.

As for Granada, they currently find themselves down in 19th with just one win and seven points to their name. The Andalusian side returned to Spain's top flight after winning the Segunda Division last season, but they've struggled to adapt to the jump in quality thus far.
