Toledo (11-1) will need to beat the RedHawks (10-2) for the second time in 42 days if they hope to defend their MAC Championship title on Saturday. After losing their season opener to Illinois, the Rockets went on an 11-game win streak, picking up a 21-17 win over the RedHawks along the way.

During that previous meeting Miami fell behind Toledo 21-3 at halftime, but managed to shut Toledo out in the second half, forcing punts on five of eight drives, but ultimately unable to regain enough ground for the win. The game was a heartbreaker for the RedHawks, who lost fifth-year quarterback Brett Gabbert to a season-ending leg injury in the fourth quarter.

Toledo’s Dequan Finn against Miami’s defense. Finn threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score during the first half of the Rockets’ 21-17 victory over the RedHawks on Oct. 21. Miami’s defense was able to shut down the junior quarterback in the second half, allowing him to complete only 3 of 12 passes for 13 yards.

Miami: Graham Nicholson is one of three finalists for the Lou Groza Award, given to the nation’s top placekicker. The junior is the first RedHawk and third placekicker in Mid-American Conference history to be named a finalist for the award. Nicholson has connected on 23 of 23 field goal attempts and 33 of 34 extra points. Nicholson is 8 of 8 on field goals over 40 yards this season, including a career-long 52-yarder.

Toledo: RB Peny Boone has rushed for at least 100 yards in eight games this year. He is the first Rocket to break the 100-yard mark eight times in a season since Kareem Hunt did it in 2016. Boone now has 1,359 yards for the season, which ranks fifth in FBS. He is also second in yards per carry and is eighth with 15 rushing touchdowns.

Toledo put the wraps on its unbeaten MAC regular season on Nov. 24 with a 32-17 win at Central Michigan. Peny Boone ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Boone has piled up 1,359 yards and 15 touchdowns this season while quarterback Dequan Finn has thrown for 2,384 yards and 21 TDs with eight interceptions. Jerjuan Newton is the top receiving target with 43 catches for 570 yards and nine scores.

The RedHawks held off host Ball State on Nov. 25, picking up a 17-15 victory after trailing 6-0 early. Aveon Smith threw for 170 yards and a touchdown while Rashad Amos picked up a rushing touchdown. Amos leads the ground game with 821 yards and 10 TDs. Smith took over from injured starter Brett Gabbert after the Toledo loss and has 529 yards and two scores on the season.

Miami (Ohio) leads the all-time series 28-23-1 and after not playing each other from 2012-22, the teams face off for the second time this season. The Rockets beat the RedHawks in Oxford, Ohio, on Oct. 21, picking up a 21-17 win after leading 21-3 at the half.
